This week we had guest lecturer Dean Richard Allen for a session looking specifically editing for GENRE, in the case, SUSPENSE. We looked at many examples of the multiple ways that Hitchcock employed editing techniques to heightened various kinds of suspense.
THE GREATS
The Greats: Andrei Tarkovsky
I have never been able to understand how an artist can be in a state of happiness during the creative process. Man does not exist for the purpose of being happy. There is a much, much higher purpose to life than merely being in a state of happiness. -Andrei Tarkovsky
The Greats: Coppola
“The essence of cinema is editing. It’s the combination of what can be extraordinary images of people during emotional moments, or images in a general sense, put together in a kind of alchemy.” -Francis Ford Coppola
The Greats – Thelma Schoonmaker
“You get to contribute so significantly in the editing room because you shape the movie and the performances.”
-Thelma Schoonmaker
